KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – This September, KCTV5 meteorologists are raising money for The Assistance League of Kansas City, by doing what they do best.

The 3 Degree Guarantee gives $50 to the organization every day that KCTV5 forecasts the high temperature within three degrees.

The Assistance League said it plans to use the money raised by the First Warn 5 Team for its Operation School Bell Program.

It’s a program the Assistance League is proud of. They recently built a new building for students to visit.

“They’ve had instances where the kid is walking out the door and they come back and they give them a hug and say this is the best day of my life,” said Debbie Sobba, director-at-large for the Assistance League of Kansas City.

The new building is full of new clothes, shoes, books, hats, gloves and several other things for students to take home.

Last year alone, Operation School Bell offered a free shopping, spree–like experience to more than 4,000 local kids.

“They get to come in here and they get to choose their own clothing. It makes them feel better about themselves. The choices are theirs and they’re not hand-me-downs,” Sobba said.

The students are chosen by school community resource specialists who are in the schools, like Meghan Shipley.

“I always like to see them when they wear their outfits to school and they like to show me they are like ‘This is what we got on our field trip,’” Shipley said. “I always love seeing their faces when we walk in the door and they see all the clothes. Some of them are like ‘how are we going to pay for it, are you going to pay for it?’ And I’m like ‘no you get to get whatever you want — it’s free’.”

Funds for the Operation School Bell items come from donations and the Assistance League’s Retail Store.
