The event was filled with applause, cheers, and the sorority’s colors of salmon pink and apple green.
It celebrated the sorority’s milestone and honored individuals and groups making significant contributions to Kansas City.
“This is monumental to celebrate 100 years of sisterhood, service and scholarship is just awesome, not just for Kansas City region but Kansas City as a whole,” said Kansas City Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Park-Shaw.
Park-Shaw, also a member of the sorority, emphasized the event’s historical significance.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, the oldest African-American sorority in the U.S., began in the early 1900s as a safe space for black women.
The evening also saw the distribution of awards for leadership and service.
