Alton community mourns the loss of their beloved K-9 officer while rallying together to support the recovering hero.

Alton Community Mourning Loss Of K-9; Officer Recovering

ALTON, Ill. – One suspect and a K-9 police dog were killed, while one police officer was hurt following an apparent shootout Thursday morning in Alton, according to Illinois State Police.

The incident under investigation unfolded around 6 a.m. Thursday near the 700 block of East 6th Street.

ISP says, based on preliminary reports, officers from the Alton Police Department engaged in gunfire with a suspect. The suspect was hurt and taken to a hospital with injuries, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Investigators say one officer and one K-9, both from the Alton Police Department, were shot amid gunfire. The officer is being treated for undisclosed injuries at a nearby hospital. The K-9 was rushed to a local veterinary hospital, but later died from its injuries.

The dog has been identified as Odin, who was just shy of being two years old. He graduated from the academy in May.

Illinois State Police says it will investigate the use of force in this incident, then turn over the investigation to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Over 30 law enforcement vehicles from different agencies formed a procession Thursday afternoon for Odin as he was transported to Gent’s Funeral Home.

“The loss of Odin is not just a loss of a service animal, but of a loyal companion and a trusted team member,” Alton Mayor David Goins said.

Illinois Sen. Erica Harriss was in attendance of the procession, soon releasing a statement that read, in-part:

“It was a humbling honor to pay my respects to fallen K9 Officer Odin and our brave officers this afternoon. This solemn occasion is a powerful reminder to remember and pray for our local first responders. My thoughts are with Officer Averbeck, his family, the Alton Police Department, and our entire law enforcement community during this difficult time.”

Letters and flowers were left in Odin’s honor at the Alton Police Department, and flags are flying at half mast.

Officer Averback is safely at home and thankful for everyone’s support as he is devastated over the loss of his K-9.
