On Wednesday night, an American Airlines regional jet crashed into the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after colliding with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, according to officials. This incident initiated a multi-agency search-and-rescue operation.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported that initial information suggests a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet was involved in a midair collision with the helicopter while approaching the airport around 9 p.m. local time. The aircraft had taken off from Wichita, Kansas.

Rescue teams are actively searching for survivors after a passenger plane crashed into a river in Washington, D.C., following a mid-air collision with a U.S. Army helicopter.
