Missouri’s AFT chapter appoints new leadership amid changing educational landscapes
St. Louis, MO — Carron “CeeJay” Johnson was elected as the new president of the American Federation of Teachers – Missouri on September 14, 2024. Nominated for the position by the floor, Ms. Johnson earned the support of more than 3,000 AFT-Missouri members.
Ms. Johnson’s election victory was driven by her dedication to advocating for AFT members on critical issues, including strengthening security and compensation packages. She is also committed to fostering collaboration between community leaders, parents, local unions and elected officials not only to enhance solidarity with political relationships but to build unified engagement and advocacy. In AFT MO, we must remember we have bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodial staff, health care workers, teachers, librarians, support staff in/out of schools, trades and more. Ms. Johnson emphasizes the importance of providing students with skilled and dedicated educators and all those who serve our children.
As she puts it, “Our students today are our leaders in the workforce tomorrow. Missouri’s students deserve to be taught by the best and always come in contact with the best. Our educators and all the support staff are the best, yet we are often neglected in many areas. AFT Missouri stands ready to make the change by fostering a unified culture not just among our union families and public schools, but our community. It takes all of us, for all of us to thrive!”
Ms. Johnson brings over 15 years of experience in education and advocacy for underserved communities. She has been a member of Local 420 in St. Louis for the past nine years and currently serves as the Vice President of Support Staff.
