What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements and contributions of black people throughout history. In February, people and organizations across the world come together to remember and recognize the contributions of African Americans throughout history. It began as “Negro History Week” in 1926 and later became a month-long celebration in 1976. During this period, events and activities are held honoring black people who have made historical contributions in their respective field of work. The celebration of Black History Month has grown significantly in recent years, with people and organizations across the globe coming together to recognize the achievements of African Americans. It’s a time to remember and celebrate the heroes of the past and reflect on what still needs to happen in order to create a more equitable society. //
Why is Black History Month important?
Black History Month is important because it serves as a reminder of our shared history and the progress that has been made. It’s a time to appreciate the numerous contributions of black people throughout history and reflect on how far we have come. It’s also an opportunity to highlight the critical role that African Americans have played in shaping America’s history. From civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, to politicians like Barack Obama, to pioneers like Madam C.J. Walker and Jackie Robinson, African Americans have played an instrumental role in forging a path to a more equitable society. Black History Month is also a time to reflect on the systemic racism that exists in society and the effects it has had on African Americans. From the criminal justice system to education and employment opportunities, African Americans are still struggling to achieve true equality in many areas. Black History Month is an essential reminder of this struggle and a call to action in the pursuit of equity.
