My favorite month of the year is Black History Month, a time when I can share the stories of our significant movements from both the past and present. It’s also an opportunity to acknowledge vital locations across the nation that are dedicated to preserving our heritage. One such place is the Bruce R. Watkins Center in Kansas City, MO, which plays an important role in this mission.

This is just one of the many captivating stories I’ll be sharing with our vibrant readers this month. Prepare to be immersed in the rich history and celebration of African Americans’ legacy of knowledge!

About:

Watkins Cultural Heritage Center & Museum is a beacon of African-American heritage in Kansas City, dedicated to commemorating and interpreting the rich diaspora through cultural and educational programs. Events:

The “Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight” exhibit at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center is an important celebration of the contributions of African Americans in aviation and space exploration. Organized by the Smithsonian Institution, this exhibition will be available to the public for three months, from February 4 to May 3.

The exhibit is divided into six sections, each highlighting the achievements and stories of Black Americans who have significantly impacted the aviation industry. Notably, it includes a dedicated section on the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators, who played a crucial role during World War II.

Visitors can expect to see a variety of photographs and first-hand interviews that bring to life the experiences of these trailblazing individuals. The “Black Wings” exhibit is free to the public and is open from Tuesday to Saturday, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to learn about the vital contributions of African Americans in the field of aviation and to appreciate their legacy in the broader context of American history.

Donations

If you are heading to Kansas City from St. Louis, it is only a short 4 hour drive. And I hope you have a great time checking out the exhibit, and possibly enjoying some delicious BBQ.
