(First Alert 4) – Hundreds of people flood into the City Foundry to check out the 20-plus food options during the lunch hour in Midtown on Thursday.
“First time here, we love it,” Caitlin Poston said.
“It’s amazing,” Alexander Rolnick shared sitting with friends. “You can get Indian food there, Mexican food over there, all of it is locally owned and it’s fantastic.”
The City Foundry reports it generated $23.2 million in 2022. The next year customers spent $50.2 million at the food, retail, and entertainment district – a 116% increase.
“It’s a sign of vitality, it seems like,” customer Abby Scharbach said.
New data from Missouri’s Department of Revenue shows people are spending more money in the City of St. Louis, especially its downtown area neighborhoods, for 2023.
The data shows spending for 2023 compared to 2022 and also to 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
$5.9 billion was spent by locals and visitors in 2023. That’s up 12% from 2022, but even more impressively a 25% increase compared to 2019.
Other highlights include:
Ballpark Village: An 11% change from 2022 to 2023, 55% change from 2019 to 2023
Union Station: A 7% change from 2022 to 2023, 84% change from 2019 to 2023
Downtown CID: A 7% change from 2022 to 2023, 28% change from 2019 to 2023
Cherokee CID: A 28% change from 2022 to 2023, 84% change from 2019 to 2023
Central West End: An 8% change from 2022 to 2023, 14% change from 2019 to 2023
The Grove: A 24% change from 2022 to 2023, 51% change from 2019 to 2023
South Grand: A 2% change from 2022 to 2023, 15% change from 2019 to 2023
The data also shows CITYPARK, the home of MLS team St. Louis CITY SC reported $44 million in spending in 2023.
Back at The City Foundry, there is no telling who will be among those enjoying the food and atmosphere.
NBA skills coach Chris Matthews with Nike Elite 100 was in town from Los Angeles on Thursday. He said he makes The Foundry a must-stop each time he visits St. Louis. In town for a recent skills camp at Saint Louis University, he told First Alert 4, The Foundry leaves a lasting impression on people from out of town.
“I’ve been seeing St. Louis clean it up,” Matthews shared. “Especially downtown. We were going for walks downtown and St. Louis is doing a great job bringing the resources as needed.”
For the City Foundry, several ingredients are at work.
Management tells First Alert 4 the foundry food court is near capacity as an incubator for local eats. A new barbeque restaurant is slated to open in two weeks, filling 17,000 square feet across three floors.
Puttshack and The City Foundry Winery are drawing crowds, complimenting the massive Museum of Illusions which opened earlier in 2024.
The success of The Foundry and Midtown overall is a teaching tool for area history teacher Alexander Rolnick who told First Alert 4 he brings his students to Midtown to see firsthand the city is booming.
