Legal Action Exposes Concerns over Leadership and Education Standards in St. Louis Public Schools.

ST. LOUIS – A coalition of community members, led by Chester Asher, founder of the Coalition for STL Kids, has filed a lawsuit against St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) Board President Antoinette “Toni” Cousins and the SLPS Board. The lawsuit accuses the board of stifling criticism and failing to address significant educational deficiencies within the district.
According to the lawsuit, the SLPS Board implemented policies that allegedly suppressed the voices of parents, teachers, taxpayers, and community advocates who sought to push for meaningful change. The coalition claims that community members raising valid concerns about the district’s performance were dismissed or labeled as “anti-SLPS,” undermining efforts to improve outcomes for students.

The lawsuit also emphasizes a lack of concrete goals from the SLPS Board, despite urgent concerns about student achievement. Disturbingly, 79% of all students and 87% of Black students in the district reportedly cannot read at grade level. “This lawsuit is about ensuring the voices of parents, teachers, and taxpayers are not suppressed,” Asher stated. “The Board’s repeated attempts to label criticism as ‘anti-SLPS’ stifle the community’s ability to demand the improvements our children deserve. Loving SLPS and advocating for its betterment should go hand in hand.”
Adding to the turmoil, SLPS is grappling with a leadership crisis following the recent firing of former Superintendent Dr. Keisha Scarlett. The abrupt dismissal has deepened frustrations within the community, leaving many questioning the direction and stability of the district’s governance.
The lawsuit arrives just as St. Louis gears up for its upcoming SLPS Board elections, scheduled for April 2025. The election will feature several candidates vying for seats on the board, including incumbents and new challengers seeking to bring a fresh perspective to the district’s leadership. The outcome of these elections could significantly impact the future trajectory of SLPS governance.

On the national stage, St. Louis Public Schools continues to face significant challenges. The district consistently ranks near the bottom among public school systems in the United States, reflecting ongoing struggles with academic performance, resource allocation, and leadership stability. These rankings only add to the urgency for meaningful reforms to address systemic issues and improve outcomes for students.
As the lawsuit progresses, it underscores the critical need for transparency, accountability, and community engagement within SLPS. Advocates hope this legal action will not only ensure the voices of stakeholders are heard but also drive the district toward the meaningful changes necessary to better serve St. Louis’ children. The coalition’s efforts signal a growing demand for transformative leadership and a renewed commitment to educational excellence in the city.
