DC Public Library wins 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, recognizing its community impact and commitment to education.

2024 Library Winner National Medal for Museum and Library Service

DC Public Library has been awarded the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The medal is the nation’s highest honor, celebrating institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities.

“The 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service is a reflection on the excellent work of our staff as well as those individuals and organizations that contribute to our success,” said Richard Reyes-Gavilan, executive director of the DC Public Library. “We are so fortunate to provide services in a city that cherishes our work and recognizes our daily contributions to improve the lives of District residents. The National Medal is a testament not just to the efforts of our employees but also to the commitment of our partners and to the support of our funders.”

Throughout its history, but especially over the past several years coming out of the pandemic, DC Public Library has made meaningful contributions to the city. Whether it involved launching new reading programs like “Beyond the Book,” serving as Covid vaccination and test kit distribution centers or launching new exhibitions like “Up from the People” to offer library visitors new perspectives on the history of their city, DC Public Library has immersed itself in the betterment of the District. These initiatives demonstrate DC Public Library’s commitment to promoting literacy, ensuring equitable access to resources, and promoting Washington, DC’s rich cultural heritage.

DC Public Library’s long list of programmatic accomplishments has been supported by the fully funded and near-complete modernization of its entire physical campus. Award-winning facilities, including the inspiring Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Central Library, offer residents a wealth of meeting spaces, modern technology, books, and access to critical city services.

“IMLS is delighted to announce the 10 recipients of the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service,” said IMLS Acting Director Cyndee Landrum. “These institutions and their dedicated staff are stepping up to anticipate and meet the needs of their individual communities. From New York to Arizona, these 10 recipients are unparalleled sources of education, health, jobs, and cultural resources, bridging the gaps of distance, resources, and experience for community members. We look forward to honoring their accomplishments in Washington, DC, this summer!”

The 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service will be presented at a ceremony this summer.
