As we brace ourselves in St. Louis, where over 9 inches of snow has piled up and more is on the way, my thoughts are with Los Angeles, where another fierce wildfire is sweeping through the area. I attempted to contact a colleague in West Hollywood for an update, but unfortunately, I couldn’t get through.
In the meantime, I’ve gathered some information online to share what I’ve discovered so far.
Early Wednesday, multiple massive wildfires swept through the Los Angeles area with devastating intensity, forcing residents to flee their burning homes amidst flames, fierce winds, and thick smoke. At least three separate fires raged across the metropolitan region, stretching from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena, home of the renowned Rose Parade. In response to the escalating crisis, the Los Angeles Fire Department urgently called for off-duty firefighters to assist, while adverse weather conditions grounded firefighting aircraft, further complicating efforts to combat the blazes.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone confirmed that two people lost their lives and many others sustained injuries as the fires consumed over 1,000 structures.
Devastating images that surfaced overnight revealed luxurious homes reduced to ruins amid a storm of flaming embers, with palm trees swaying against a backdrop of a fiery red sky.
Tens of thousands of residents received evacuation orders as the flames advanced toward densely populated and affluent neighborhoods known for their celebrity residents. Notable figures, including Mark Hamill, Mandy Moore, and James Woods, were among those forced to evacuate.
The flames, which ignited Tuesday evening near a nature preserve in the foothills northeast of LA, spread with alarming speed. Staff at a senior living facility had to urgently push dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds down the street to a parking lot, where they waited in their nightclothes as embers rained down until ambulances, buses, and construction vans arrived to transport them to safety.
