Afropunk Festival is set to return to its roots in Brooklyn next month with a celebration that promises to be an electrifying homage to alternative Black music and artistry. The event, dubbed “Afropunk BLKTOPIA BKLYN,” will take place from August 23-24, 2024, at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park. This year’s festival is a collaboration with BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!, New York City’s longest-running free outdoor performing arts festival, marking a significant milestone as Afropunk prepares for its 20th anniversary in 2025.
Afropunk began in 2005 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as a haven for Black punks and has since grown into a global phenomenon, hosting events in major cities such as Atlanta, Paris, London, Dakar, and Johannesburg. While it originally catered to Black punk communities, the festival has expanded its reach to include a variety of alternative scenes and communities across the African diaspora.
This year’s event, themed “a celebration of the future of Black life, creativity, community, and expression reimagined,” aims to create a dynamic and inclusive environment. Erykah Badu, the legendary neo-soul artist known for her eclectic style and profound lyrics, will headline the festival for the first time since 2018. Badu’s multifaceted persona and powerful performances have made her a beloved figure in the music world, and her return to the Afropunk stage is highly anticipated.
The full lineup for Afropunk BLKTOPIA BKLYN has yet to be announced, but given past festivals, attendees can expect an impressive array of talent. Last year’s festival featured performances by Teyana Taylor, Joey Badass, Baby Tate, Sudan Archives, and Flying Lotus, among others. Previous years have seen appearances by artists like Tierra Whack and Doechii, solidifying Afropunk’s reputation for curating an iconic and diverse lineup.
In line with Afropunk’s commitment to inclusivity, this year’s event will feature a general admission ticket structure, ensuring that all attendees have equal access to the festival’s unique blend of music, art, and culture. Tickets are currently available to Afropunk Festival email subscribers at a reduced price until 2 pm ET on July 20. General ticket sales will begin at 3 pm ET on the same day via Ticketmaster.
