Rapper Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes II, was arrested early Wednesday morning at a St. Louis-area casino. The Missouri Highway Patrol reported finding four illegal ecstasy pills on him during the arrest. However, Nelly’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, claims that an “overzealous” officer targeted the rapper and conducted an improper search.
The arrest occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. at the Hollywood Casino and Hotel in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Nelly, 49, was detained and later released by local police. The St. Louis suburb is known for its entertainment venues, and Nelly, who grew up in the area, is a frequent visitor.
Online Missouri court records reveal that Nelly was cited in June 2018 in Maryland Heights for operating a vehicle without proper proof of insurance. A judge issued a warrant in December 2023, which remained outstanding. Rosenblum explained that Nelly had won several jackpots at the casino, and when he attempted to collect his winnings, the supervising officer conducted a warrant search. Upon discovering the outstanding warrant, the officer handcuffed Nelly and paraded him through the casino in front of other patrons.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s records indicate that Nelly was charged with possession of a controlled substance—four ecstasy pills—and for failing to have insurance. However, Rosenblum disputes the drug charge, asserting that Nelly was only arrested for the old traffic violation. Rosenblum emphasized that any other citizen would have likely been told to address the issue and allowed to proceed without further incident. He claimed the officer acted “out of line” and conducted a “search without probable cause.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the arrest, Nelly was ultimately released from the Maryland Heights Police Department. The incident has sparked discussions about law enforcement practices and the treatment of high-profile individuals.
In addition to the arrest, Nelly has recently made headlines for his personal life. Earlier this year, he announced his engagement to singer Ashanti and that they are expecting a baby. The couple confirmed their rekindled relationship in September 2023, 20 years after they were first linked together.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Nelly and his attorney plan to request an inquiry into the officer’s conduct during the arrest.
