Learn about Dwight Howard’s journey from the NBA to playing for the Taiwan Mustangs in The Asian Tournament, where top teams from Asia compete for a championship.

Former lakers superstar is back but this time in China.

Dwight Howard is a familiar name in the basketball world. Howard has a number of accolades under his belt. He was the first pick of the 2004 draft, and during his time in the NBA, he was an eight-time All-Star, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year and he won a championship. He last played for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021-22 in what was his third stint with the franchise.

Fast forward to today, Howard is a member of the Taiwan Mustangs, who are playing in The Asian Tournament (TAT). He is also part owner of the team. TAT features top teams throughout Asia competing against one another for a championship. It is a newer league gearing up for action.

Howard had a successful stint in Taiwan prior to this, as he spent time with the Taoyuan Leopards (now Taiwan Beer Leopards). Now, Howard will bring some familiar faces to the Mustangs.

Former NBA players (and Lakers) DeMarcus Cousins and Quinn Cook will be playing for the Mustangs. Cousins was the fifth pick of the 2010 draft. He was selected by the Sacramento Kings, who he stayed with until 2017. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans the same year. He and Anthony Davis were meant to be a “twin towers” duo (like Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan and David Robinson and so on). Cousins ended up signing with the Golden State Warriors the next season, after injuring his left Achilles and having season ending surgery during his time with the Pelicans. He later had stints with the Lakers, the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Denver Nuggets. In 2023, he joined the Guaynabo Mets in Puerto Rico. And like Howard, Cousins spent time with the Taiwan Beer Leopards.

Cook went undrafted in 2015, but spent time with the Dallas Mavericks, the Pelicans, the Warriors, the Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has since played in Russia, China and Puerto Rico. Cook won two championships during his time in the NBA.

The addition of Cousins and Cook brings excitement to TAT and makes the Mustangs even stronger.

Can Howard and the Mustangs win it all?
