Join Lyrik’s Institution and master the Creative Arts while gaining valuable professional experience through paid internships.

This week we spotlight another great non-profit organization in Missouri. Get to know Lyrik’s Institution of Kansas City, MO.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to reduce crime and violence by targeting destructive thinking errors and reworking them into productive behaviors.

Lyrik’s Institution is a cognitive based program that allows its students to master in the Creative Arts of their choice and take part in paid internships to become market value assets. Our internships offer career opportunities that pay a living wage. Lyrik’s understands the power of the culture and sees that it is influential enough to reinforce the cognitive behavior therapy strategy.

Those tools require an environment that encourages and fosters our scholars to succeed. We create that environment for young adults to thrive in. It is with these strategies that the Lyrik’s Institution rises and stands above the rest.

In Kansas City, MO, the analytics retained for the annual crime per capita are astronomical. Neighborhood Schout (Kansas City, MO Crime Rates and Statistics – NeighborhoodScout) has Kansas City crime index at a 2 (100 would be the safest place to live). Kansas City is safer than 2% of all the US cities to live in. Kansas Cities annual crimes that are violent are at 7,853 and property crimes are at 21,409, totaling at 29,262. The crime rate (per 1,000 residents) is a staggering 15.96% for violent crimes and 43.52% for property crimes, totaling a devastating 59.49%. These numbers are not just digits on a spread sheet. These numbers represent real people, real mothers, and real fathers. These numbers represent the people that call our beloved city home such as the nurses and doctors that serve us in the most trying times of our lives, to the teachers that prepare each day to inspire the next generation of politicians and construction workers. It’s not enough to just look at these numbers, something must be done.

Programs offered:

Power Moves

Pow·er move: The ability to make an effective decision that is reasoned from an objective, empathetic, culturally competent, and social and emotional thought process. This decision has social and economic influence rather it is personal or community driven.

“Power Moves: The Tour” were designed to make social-emotional learning interactive. Learning happens in real time, and that’s how we plan to enrich the participants we serve. Lyrik’s heartbeat is cognitive behavior modification from culturally competent programming. Our programs are developed from, and for the issues, young adults face as they navigate poverty, adverse realities, home life, and school life. These skills can’t be exclusively taught in the classroom. The principles have to be applied in real time. Lyrik’s Identifies businesses, organizations, community groups, and civic leaders to help bring the lessons we teach to life.

Interventions: Level Up

Lyrik’s interventions are focused on utilizing cognitive behavior modification to address adverse realities in a culturally representative manner. Our goal is to not only rehabilitate individuals but to provide abilitation, which involves taking individuals to a state of being they have never experienced before. This is not just for the participants we serve, but also for teachers, administration, and other parties who interact with our young adults.

We use data-driven curriculums and practices to make a significant impact on the demographic we serve. By infusing cognitive behavior modification into our interventions, we help individuals understand and modify their thought patterns, resulting in more positive behaviors and outcomes. Our approach is culturally sensitive and inclusive, acknowledging the unique experiences and backgrounds of the individuals we serve. Through our interventions, we strive to empower individuals to overcome adversity and achieve their full potential.

The Hangouts

The Hangouts are a series of events designed for young adults to have fun in the city safely. We understand that young adults need to have their space and make decisions about how they spend their time. However, we also know that without the right support, things can go wrong. That’s why we’re here to help. At The Hangouts, we offer conflict resolution, social and emotional, communication, and anger management interventions by trained culture coaches. Our coaches are here to help de-escalate conflicts and ensure that everyone has a good time without anyone getting hurt. We understand that conflict is a normal part of life, but we want to make sure that young adults understand how to navigate it safely. The Hangouts include a variety of events, such as summer dances, game nights, basketball tournaments, dance battles, kickbacks, and more. We want to offer a range of activities that appeal to different interests and personalities. To find out about upcoming Hangouts, simply click on the events tab on our website. We update our page regularly with new events each month, so make sure to check back often. We’re here to support young adults in having fun and making safe decisions. Join us at The Hangouts and let’s have a great time together!

Fall in the Park Back to School Filed Day

Fall in the Park Back to School is a comprehensive program that addresses the various aspects of going back to school. We understand that going back to school can be a stressful and overwhelming time for students and families, and we want to provide the necessary resources and support to make it a positive experience.

The program focuses on five key areas: school, health, social resources, entertainment, and appearance. We partner with the Emmanuel Child Learning and Development Center to provide wraparound services that align with the school supplies we give away. This includes health, food, housing, jobs, and transportation support, which are all crucial resources that students and families need to succeed.

We also collaborate with the Know Joey Foundation for their Fresh Cut Fresh Start back-to-school bash. This event provides young adults with a fresh cut and style to boost their confidence on the first day of school. We partner with local barbers to provide this service, and we’ve been doing this for the last 15 years.

On the entertainment side, Lyrik’s partners with various organizations to create an unforgettable experience for students and families. We work with the Kansas City Royals to host an amazing event that goes beyond just giving away backpacks. Additionally, we collaborate with the Kansas City Public Schools and Charter schools to offer families a range of education choices and create exposure for education opportunities.

Fall in the Park Back to School takes place in August, the weekend before students go back to school. We encourage families to pre-register for the event on our events page and click on the Fall in the Park link to learn more. By addressing the various aspects of going back to school, we aim to make the transition a positive one for all involved.

Internship In The NowLyrik’s Institution centers on behavior modification, while allowing our young adults to intern in a respected career field. While we do focus on the creative arts, we realize that every young adult will not prosper in that vocation. So, we changed our mentorship program into an internship program. Here we offer young adults the chance to learn “soft skills” such as:  job etiquette, critical thinking, conflict resolution and accountability, effective communication, vulnerability, socialization, solution focused behavior, emotional intelligence, as well as goal and process setting. It’s these critical skills that lay a foundation for our young adults to thrive once they receive “hard skills” training. Yet and still, we don’t stop there, we pair the interns with respected business owners in the career field of their choice. So, they not only learn the soft skills and training, but they also receive the opportunity to learn the wisdom of their career choice from someone thriving in that industry. Click here for more information

The science behind it:

Studies have shown that residents of inner cities live at a higher level of stress then their counter parts that live in suburban areas. Due to the constant bombardment of police and ambulance sirens, violent and drug activity, helicopter sounds, domestic violence, poverty, and negative social interaction, at such a high rate, that on an unconscious level, it raises their sense of awareness that is fueled by negative stress. The high level of stress keeps the residents on edge. That results in hyper-violent reactions to what one would assume to be simple situations. This also contributes to an increase ideology of survival or “I must do whatever it takes to make it through the day”. This philosophy seems to be a societal norm, which in many cases it is, but when it is seen through the lens of adverse living conditions, it could create an influx in criminal activity.
Taking a look at Kansas City’s constant influx in crime over the years, shows that this study has merit. Kansas City’s crime per square mile is at a devastating 92 crimes per square mile compared to the national median that rest at 31.1. The re-enforcer that keeps the cycle going, is the sickening cycle itself. The more crimes, the more police we add, the more police the more arrests, which leads to separation in the homes. This is initiated by a 911 call that sends an officer in route, that is proceeded with sirens to clear the way due to an emergency.
