Ronnie Amiin, Program Manager at the Freedom Community Center says, “We believe that events like this are so important as it relates to honoring black men, black women and black children. We want to counter the narrative that says that we aren’t contributing to the uplifting of our community and doing positive things. We want to counter the negative images that are often played in our media about black men. We also want to be a model for our children coming up so they can see models of what is possible.”
This event is part of the Be the Change programming, presented by former Jennings Councilwoman Aja Owens and her sister Adrienne Draper. Be The Change is an initiative they started during the pandemic to provide resources and opportunities for Jenning’s residents. The Living Legends program was adapted from a book they co-authored featuring oral histories, poetry, photographs, and more. This is their 6th Living Legends program hosted at the museum. To date, they have honored 39 black women, black men and black youth.
