I sincerely apologize for the delay in publishing this article. Unfortunately, my phone was damaged and the repairs took longer than expected, which delayed my access to the interview information and photos. I appreciate your understanding and patience.
Saman Swanson has been enchanting audiences with her voice since she was three years old and performing professionally since the age of 12. Her motivation for singing is simple: pure love. Music runs deep in her family, particularly on her father’s side, where singing and playing instruments is as natural as breathing.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ms. Swanson during one of the Twilight Thursday performances, a tribute to the legendary Tina Marie. Although we discussed many things, it was only fitting to ask her about her favorite Tina Marie song. She shared that she has been a fan since she was eight, captivated by Tina Marie’s voice without knowing much about her background. Her favorite songs include “Square Biz” and the Saman fan-favorite “Out on a Limb.”
The idea for this tribute was brought to Saman and The Black and White Band by Maurice “Snoopy” Falls. The combination of a tribute to Tina Marie, Saman Swanson, the Black and White Band and a beautiful St. Louis evening made this particular Twilight Thursday the ideal place to be. The show started at 6 PM, with people arriving as early as 3 PM!
Ms. Swanson’s electrifying engagement with the audience is a testament to her passion. She embraces “that feeling” that takes over when she hits the stage. Witnessing her “Saman Strut” before she took the stage was a highlight of my evening. Despite her dynamic stage presence, she revealed that offstage, she is quite reserved and shy.
When asked what question she would have asked Tina Marie if she had met her, Ms. Swanson’s thoughtful response was about what drove the artist and kept her pushing forward. Swanson seems to embody Tina Marie’s grounded, humble, yet strong and authentic approach to her music career.

Next, I spoke with Lindsay Newton, Director of Education and Community Engagement at the Missouri History Museum, who organizes Twilight Thursday. The concert series is a significant event at the museum, offering varied genres and bringing out fans of all ages. It provides an excellent opportunity for families to share the music they grew up with and enjoy the best in St. Louis food truck cuisine.
Parking can be a challenge due to the large crowds, but arrangements with the City of St. Louis and Metro Transit help alleviate this issue. The University City trolley runs later on concert nights to transport attendees from their cars to the concert.
When the concert concluded, I spoke with Kenny Black, music director and leader of the Black and White Band. He emphasized the importance of teamwork in making the evening a success and shared insights into selecting the right artists for a live music tribute. The combination of talented musicians and familiar faces like Saman Swanson ensured a memorable performance.
Kenny Black highlighted the value of community events like Twilight Thursday, which bring people together and celebrate live music. He is grateful for the opportunity to do what he loves while entertaining St. Louis music lovers.
For more information on the Black and White Band’s upcoming performances, follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
In conclusion, thank you once again for your patience. I am grateful to share this story with you. Supporting live music and community events like Twilight Thursday is crucial for fostering a sense of togetherness and celebrating the talent within our St. Louis community. I hope you continue to enjoy the magic of live music.
