Experience the vibrant celebration of Black culture through art and music at the Impressions: Black Spirit in America exhibition.

The Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri invites the community to an evening of art, culture, and creativity at the opening reception for the Impressions: Black Spirit in America exhibition. This highly anticipated event will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the museum, located at 520 S. 9th St., Ellis Library, Columbia, MO.
The reception promises to be a vibrant celebration of Black artistry and expression. Attendees will be treated to dynamic spoken word and rap performances by OneMic, a Columbia-based creative collective. These talented artists will use their performances to engage in a dialogue with the exhibition’s featured works, creating a unique and immersive experience that bridges visual and performing arts.
The exhibition itself, Impressions: Black Spirit in America, explores themes of identity, resilience, and community through a stunning collection of artworks. Among the highlights is Faith Ringgold’s The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles (1996), a color lithograph that beautifully captures the spirit of collaboration and heritage. The piece depicts a group of women in a sunflower field, holding a quilt adorned with sunflowers—a powerful symbol of unity and creativity.
This event is free and open to the public, making it an excellent opportunity for art enthusiasts, families, and community members to come together and celebrate the richness of Black culture. The exhibition will remain on view through May 2026, offering ample time to explore its profound narratives.
