NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Nashville’s first African American and female bus operator has been honored with a mural at the WeGo Transit Center just over two years after having the downtown location named after her.

Nashville native Elizabeth Duff became the first African American and the first female bus operator in the city’s history when she was hired in 1974 for what was then called the Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority, later renamed WeGo.

Duff held her position for 33 years until she retired in 2007. Duff passed away in 2021 at the age of 72 and was honored just over a year later when the Metro Council approved an ordinance renaming the downtown transit center the Elizabeth Duff Transit Center at WeGo Central.

Today, Duff was honored yet again with a mural spanning 1,400 square feet at the facility. On hand for the ceremony and mural unveiling was Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell, state lawmakers, and Duff’s surviving family.
