Get the inside scoop on the top 5 players who could take home the coveted MVP award for the 2024-25 NBA season.
Last season’s Most Valuable Player race was exciting. There were a number of players performing at a high level, and the race was arguably closer than it has been in the past few seasons. The 2024-25 MVP race will be just as exciting, and will feature some familiar faces. Here are five players that could take home the MVP award.
1.) Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic is no stranger to the MVP award. He took home the award last season after averaging 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, nine assists and 1.4 steals. These stats made him the only player to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the 2023-24 season and the sixth player in NBA history to put up those numbers in a single season. He also finished the season with 25 triple-doubles. Jokic became the ninth player in NBA history to win three or more MVPs. Now, he is in the same company as players such as Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
Jokic won the MVP in 2021 and 2022 before winning last season. Jokic is bound to have another MVP caliber season, and can add to his legacy.
2.) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Shai Gilegous-Alexander continues to make a name for himself. The young guard has put up big numbers in his last few seasons, and in a recent poll involving league executives, scouts and coaches, Gilgeous-Alexander received the most votes when it came to MVP predictions. He finished second in the MVP race and the year before that, he finished fifth. This upcoming season could be the year he finally takes home MVP.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 30.1 points, 6.2 assists, 5.5 rebounds and two steals. He led Oklahoma City to their best season since the 2013-14 season. They went 59-23 in the 13-14 season and went 57-25 last season. Oklahoma City was the first seed of the West last season, and this year, they have a chance to prove they can be contenders for years to come.
Gilgeous-Alexander is a player to keep an eye on, and after being so close to the MVP last season, this could be his year.
3.) Luka Doncic
Luka Doncic had a strong season, as he averaged 33.9 points, 9.8 assists, 9.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Doncic led the league in scoring, and he had 13 games of 40 or more points this season. He also had a 73-point game back in January.
Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks reached the NBA Finals, but lost to the Boston Celtics. But the Mavericks made a big move in the offseason that could put them over the hump. They added Klay Thompson, who will give the Mavericks more offense when they need it. This move could impact Doncic’s scoring, as he and Kyrie Irving do not have to take on as much of the scoring load, but he will still play at a high level. Doncic is an exceptional talent that will continue to be in MVP conversations.
4.) Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo is the second player on this list to win an MVP. Antetokounmpo won the MVP back-to-back awards in 2019 and 2020. The Milwaukee Bucks have won a championship with Antetokounmpo leading the way, but their past two seasons have consisted of being knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. The duo of Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard are entering their second season, and this is a chance to show what they can do. This duo can make great things happen, and this could be the year Milwaukee gets another ring. Antetokoumnmpo averaged 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 2023-24. This season is another chance for Antetokounmpo to dominate.
5.) Joel Embiid/Anthony Edwards
This spot is a bit of a toss-up. Joel Embiid is a former MVP, as he won the award in 2023. Embiid has been in the race in the past, but last season, he was ineligible for the MVP race as the NBA introduced a rule that MVP candidates have to play at least 65 games in the season. Embiid battled injuries and did not meet the requirement. Embiid is still one of the best players in the league, and if he stays healthy, he should be in MVP talks. This is especially true as he has a new teammate in Paul George.
On the other hand, Anthony Edwards is a young player whose popularity is on the rise. He is a competitor and thrives off of playing against the best players in the league. Edwards and the Timberwolves turned heads in the playoffs with their performance and now, Edwards has a chance to take his game to the next level. While he has tough competition in players like Jokic, Gilegous-Alexander and Doncic, Edwards could potentially be in the MVP race this season.
This year’s MVP race could be one for the history books, and it will be interesting to see who takes it. It is also fun to make some early predictions.
