Riding to Victory: How One Man Found His True Passion as a Sought-After Cycle Instructor
Derrick A. Walker is like many other young men who grew up in the heart of the city. His parents enrolled him in sports to keep his active energy busy, and he dabbled in several different kinds of sports including basketball, baseball, track, swimming, gymnastics, and even a little bit of soccer. He was also a pretty good hip hop and tap dancer. No matter which sport it was, Derrick trained hard and had a competitive spirit. However, despite all the sports he engaged in, he often dealt with a lot of pain, including plantar fasciitis, back and knee pain, and fatigue.
It wasn’t until 2019, when Derrick took his first cycle class at Fitness Factory with PeChaz Clark, that he found a new kind of cardio. Initially out of breath, Derrick discovered a different type of workout that intrigued him. His wife, an athletic individual herself, had been attending cycle classes and encouraged him to join her. One day, he decided to surprise her, and to his own surprise, he loved it. The energy, the music, and the members created an atmosphere that drew him in. Remarkably, his pain and fatigue diminished, and he felt like he could cycle every day. As he continued attending cycle classes, he quickly emerged as a leader and motivator. Recognizing his potential, the owner approached him with an opportunity to join the team as a cycle instructor at Generation 3 Fitness.
As Derrick prepares for his classes, he feels that the music and routines are God-sent. His years of dancing and playing the drums have come full circle, proving instrumental in creating classes that sell out every week. Derrick has become a true motivator not only for his class but also in the community.
Every year around his birthday, August 3rd, Derrick embarks on a different kind of ride. He organizes “Rides N School Supplies,” a charity car and bike show held at O’Fallon Park Rec Complex. This back-to-school event provides backpacks and school supplies, fueling the future of countless children. This is the second year that the event fell on his actual birthday.
After graduating from college, Derrick sought a way to give back to the community. His love for cars inspired him to help kids dream and work hard to achieve nice things. Teaming up with his cousin Nic Collins and good friend Korey Johnson, Derrick turned this vision into reality.
