Esteemed leadership at Harris-Stowe State University earns national recognition.

Dr. Latonia Collins Smith, the trailblazing President of Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU), has earned a prestigious spot on the HBCU Campaign Fund’s list of the “National Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders of 2025.” This annual recognition honors individuals whose visionary leadership has significantly advanced Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and their surrounding communities.

Dr. Collins Smith’s tenure as president has been marked by transformative achievements. Under her leadership, HSSU has raised over $3.5 million in scholarships and donations, directly benefiting students and expanding opportunities for academic success. In addition, she has overseen a remarkable increase in the university’s graduation rate, showcasing her unwavering commitment to student achievement and institutional excellence.

Harris-Stowe State University, located in St. Louis, Missouri, holds the distinction of being one of only two HBCUs in the state, alongside Lincoln University in Jefferson City. HSSU’s unique role in serving a diverse student body underscores the importance of Dr. Collins Smith’s accomplishments in fostering access to quality education and driving institutional growth.

There are currently 101 HBCUs across the United States, including both public and private institutions, each playing a vital role in providing higher education opportunities for historically underserved populations.
