KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

Renowned hip-hop producer Metro Boomin’ has donated $20,000 to Essential Families, a Kansas City-based nonprofit dedicated to helping single parents gain essential skills, find employment, and access critical resources.

Essential Families has made a significant difference in the lives of many single parents, including Mary Taylor, who credits the organization with helping her transform her life. As a single mother, Mary struggled to find flexible employment that allowed her to provide for her family while also meeting her responsibilities at home.

“Flexibility. I can set my own schedule,” Taylor shared, adding that the opportunities provided by Essential Families have been financially beneficial. “When you have someone paying you $50 an hour to assist other individuals, it definitely helps you financially.”

The nonprofit, founded by Terri English-Yancy, gives single parents the tools they need to succeed, including free laptops and skills training. The surprise donation from Metro Boomin’, known for his collaborations with artists like Drake and Future, will help the organization’s mission.

“We got a call saying, ‘Hey, Metro’s in town. He wants to donate to an organization that’s providing services for single moms,’” English-Yancy said. She explained that the generous donation is deeply personal for Metro Boomin’, who was raised by a single mother who was tragically killed in 2022 in a domestic violence incident. The donation is part of his ongoing effort to honor his mother’s memory by supporting single mothers in need.

Essential Families plans to use the donation to assist nearly 600 families and is setting its sights on expanding their reach nationally.
