Lee’s Summit comes together to remember Craig Scott amid an ongoing search for justice in the wake of a tragic shooting.
Lee’s Summit, MO – The recent death of Craig L. Scott, a 51-year-old entrepreneur, father, and community member, has sent shockwaves through his family, friends, and fraternity brothers. Scott was fatally shot in his Lee’s Summit home last week in what authorities described as a violent and senseless act tied to a custody dispute.
Craig Scott was widely known as a kind-hearted individual who touched the lives of many through his entrepreneurial ventures and community involvement. He owned multiple businesses, including a popular food truck and a brick-and-mortar shop specializing in funnel cakes. An alumnus of the University of Central Missouri and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, Scott remained connected to his peers and community over the years.
LaTonia Collins Smith, a lifelong friend and president of Harris-Stowe State University, remembers Scott as a “gentle soul” and “dedicated father.” Recalling Scott’s effort to check on her during a recent visit to St. Louis, she emphasized his caring, selfless demeanor. “Craig had a way of making everyone feel important. He wasn’t just a friend; he was family,” Smith shared.
According to court documents, the incident stemmed from a custody dispute involving Scott’s fiancée and Keith Marshall, the father of her two children. Marshall, 31, of Kansas City, has been charged with second-degree murder, burglary, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. Before the fatal shooting, Scott was reportedly beaten with the magazine of a semiautomatic weapon and brass knuckles. Marshall and another man allegedly forced their way into Scott’s home, where the tragic encounter unfolded.
Scott leaves behind three sons—Craig II, Zachary, and Joshua—along with a grieving community deeply affected by his loss. Friends and loved ones are focusing on celebrating his life and contributions, though they are still grappling with the shock of his untimely death.
“For us who knew him, he wasn’t just a colleague or a classmate—he was someone who genuinely made a difference in people’s lives,” said a mutual friend. “He didn’t deserve to leave this world in such a cruel way.”
Craig Scott’s legacy endures through his commitment to family, entrepreneurship, and the lives he touched. His passing serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing violence within communities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
