As August marks Black Business Month, Harris-Stowe State University students are making strides in entrepreneurship, showcasing their talents and ambition as young business owners.
Among these enterprising scholars are AJ Maxwell, Kyntorrious Brison, and J’Montez Cameron, each carving out their niche in the business world.
Maxwell, a senior majoring in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing, is the founder of Offszn Athletics. His innovative business highlights traditional sports in a unique way, encouraging athletes to try their hand at different sports.
“We turn soccer players into basketball players, basketball players into baseball players, and so on,” Maxwell explained.
Reflecting on his journey as a 21-year-old business owner, Maxwell emphasizes the importance of consistency.
“It’s about keeping the main thing the main thing. There are so many outside forces trying to pull my attention away from what I truly love, so balancing business with pleasure and still being a young adult having fun is key,” he said.
Maxwell also believes in allowing himself room to grow and learn.
“I try not to take myself too seriously. A wrong move or mistake right now isn’t going to kill me. I have time to fix, adjust, and pivot to still become successful. Hopefully, I can build something that makes myself, my family, my friends, and the sports industry very happy. I hope to leave my official mark on the sports world,” he added.
Brison, a senior majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing, founded Mr. & Mrs. Trendin Topic Clothing Line in 2021. Brison’s brand is a celebration of Black culture, with a mission to empower and uplift.
“I started my clothing line for the culture. I want Black women and men to know they are the trending topics, and in any situation they step into, they are going to stand out,” Brison said.
Cameron, a junior majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship, owns OVCustoms, a footwear business that specializes in personalized experiences. Cameron’s brand offers custom shoe services and restoration for events, teams, and commemorative milestones. His business reflects a passion for creativity and a dedication to providing customers with unique, high-quality products.
These HSSU students are not only pursuing their academic goals but also building businesses that reflect their passions and values. As Black Business Month continues, their stories serve as a testament to the power of young Black entrepreneurs in shaping the future of business and culture.
