A transformative merger enhances healthcare access in St. Louis community.

As Black History Month unfolds, St. Louis is preparing to witness a historic milestone in community healthcare. The upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony will commemorate the merger of two esteemed institutions—Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers and Amanda Luckett Murphy Hopewell Center—marking a new era of hope and wellness. This momentous occasion will take place at PEOPLE’S HEALTH CENTER, 5701 Delmar Blvd, on Friday, February 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Leading this transformative initiative is Dr. Ronald Griffin, a U.S. Veteran and distinguished healthcare administrator with over 20 years of experience in both profit and non-profit sectors, including hospitals, health centers, and veteran medical services. As the Chief Operating Officer at Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Center, Dr. Griffin brings a dedication to equitable healthcare.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Dr. Griffin credits his mother and grandparents for shaping his character. His mother and grandmother, both compassionate nurses, inspired his passion for healthcare. “Both my mom and grandma were nurses, and they were compassionate healing professionals. My mom is the best nurse I know. She told me that if I became a nurse, I could do everything—and that made me want to pursue this field,” he shared.
Dr. Griffin’s academic credentials include a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Baylor University. His journey to becoming COO was fueled by mentorship and a desire to enact policy changes rather than merely follow directives. “I wanted to be a policymaker, not just a doer of what they said to do. I really wanted to create change. They took a chance on me, and I am succeeding as the COO,” he remarked.

This merger unites two institutions that have long championed health equity, delivering essential health and mental health services to underserved Black communities. Together, as one entity, they are poised to expand their reach, providing holistic care that addresses systemic disparities in healthcare access and outcomes.
The ribbon-cutting event will be a celebration of community progress and resilience. Attendees can expect speeches from Dwayne Butler (CEO), Dr. Ronald Griffin (COO), and Dr. Moses Waithaka (VP of Behavioral Health), alongside tours of the integrated facilities on the Delmar Campus and opportunities to engage with doctors and healthcare providers. The event will also feature free COVID-19 vaccines, refreshments, and a chance for attendees to win a gift card.
Community members, healthcare leaders, local officials, and media representatives will gather to honor this historic unification, reinforcing a shared commitment to equitable, comprehensive healthcare for all.
When asked what legacy he hopes to leave behind, Dr. Griffin humbly stated, “That I gave people everything that I could give them to make the best decisions for themselves and generationally for their families.”
This event is not just about a merger—it is a celebration of unity, resilience, and a brighter future for the St. Louis community.
