KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Fox 4 KC- On Wednesday, June 19th, the country celebrates Juneteenth, the federal holiday that honors when enslaved African-Americans learned they were free.
Here is a list of some of the events going on in Kansas City to celebrate the holiday:
3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration
The third annual Juneteenth Celebration will take place at the Independence Uptown Market on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 pm.
A stage for live musical performances will be inside the Independence Uptown Market pavilion. Vendors and community organizations will set up underneath the open-air pavilion immediately east of it. Food trucks will also be at the celebration.
Juneteenth Celebration
Head to the Olathe Public Library as they honor Juneteenth on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both Indian Creek Library and Downtown Library.
Kids can enjoy storytimes, arts and crafts, and films for all ages to celebrate Juneteenth. There will also be a Black Business pop-up at Indian Creek Library.
Journey of Jazz: A Juneteenth Celebration at UMKC
Creative City KC will celebrate Juneteenth with a Journey of Jazz concert at UMKC White Recital Hall. This is a free public event.
The event starts at 6 p.m. and goes until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Juneteenth Freedom Celebration
This rooftop event at Corrigan Station will have Black male educators speaking. There will also be food, beverages, live music and great views of Kansas City.
The event is Wednesday and starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 9 p.m. Tickets are $30. Click here to buy tickets.
The Jubilee of Juneteenth: Celebrating a Legacy of Freedom
This is the third annual Juneteenth celebration hosted by the Johnson County Government on Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Lenexa Civic Campus Commons. This is a great event for the history lovers.
The event will have a speaker, live music, dance performances and more.
8th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at the Nelson
The 8th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at the Nelson Atkins Museum will be held on Thursday. There will be live music and dancing, storytelling performances, film screenings, and educational experiences in the museum’s galleries.
The event starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 9 p.m. Admission is free but registration is required for you to attend. Click here to register.
