Community Unites After Controversial Episode at Steak ‘n Shake

On New Year’s Day, a disturbing incident occurred at the Steak ‘n Shake on Hampton near Highway 40. After employees asked a group to stop smoking inside the restaurant, the situation escalated into chaos. Some individuals from the group jumped over the counter, throwing objects and assaulting employees. Thankfully, no one was harmed, but the suspects involved have not yet been identified.
In a powerful show of solidarity, more than 100 members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. gathered on January 11th to support the restaurant’s owner and their fraternity brother, Press McDowell. McDowell, who invested in the franchise six years ago, described it as one of his most rewarding ventures. Despite the recent turmoil, he remains committed to serving the community and growing his business in what he calls “an even greater city.” He has also urged continued support for Black-owned businesses.
Instead of targeting small businesses, McDowell encourages the community to uplift and support them. Unfortunately, incidents like this highlight a contradiction: while many in the Black community advocate for supporting Black-owned businesses, actions like this can undermine those efforts.
Now is the time to fully embrace and support Black entrepreneurs, just as the community did in the past when Black-owned businesses were the only available option. By showing respect, love, and loyalty to Black entrepreneurs, we can help foster their growth and success.
Let’s prioritize uplifting and respecting Black-owned businesses—treating them with the same regard we would extend to other businesses. Together, we can create a stronger, more united community.
