It seems that one newly elected President has quickly set to work on fulfilling his campaign promise. Committed to addressing immigration issues and tackling corruption at the border, The Argus Newspaper began contributing valuable assistance based on insights from global news reports to help those families who may need it.

With increased enforcement of immigration policies, many families—both undocumented and those with legal status—are living in fear. Experts emphasize the importance of knowing your rights during these uncertain times.

As the volume of calls from individuals worried about deportation rises, many organizations are stepping up to provide assistance and keep the public informed. President Donald Trump has fulfilled his promises by signing numerous executive orders on immigration, prompting attorneys to share essential steps you should take now.

“It’s vital that individuals understand their rights,” stated immigration attorney Naimeh Salem.

So, what should you know if you are detained by immigration authorities?

Here are Salem’s key pieces of advice for her clients:

  1. You have the right to remain silent.
  2. You are not required to disclose your origins or immigration status.
  3. Request a phone call to reach out to your family or an immigration attorney.
  4. Avoid signing any documents without having your attorney review them first, regardless of what you are told.

“I often hear from clients that they are being pressured to sign forms, with threats of long detention. This is false; signing for deportation is entirely optional,” Salem explained.

Additionally, you are not obligated to open your door unless authorities present a warrant signed by a judge. “An officer can show you the warrant through a window or under the door, and you are protected,” she added.

Opening your door grants them the right to search your property.

In response to these concerns, local consulates are providing support. The Mexican Consulate, for instance, is offering free consultations with immigration attorneys for Mexican nationals.

“There’s a new digital app called ConsulApp Contigo,” shared María Elena Orantes, the Mexican Consul. This app allows users to input their details as well as those of three loved ones as emergency contacts.

If you are detained, ConsulApp Contigo will automatically notify your emergency contacts. In urgent situations, you can press a button to send your exact location to both the consulate and your contacts, aiming to assist families when loved ones are detained.

Once someone is detained by immigration authorities, attorneys warn that the process can take up to two weeks. Therefore, they encourage families to have a plan in place: secure a trustworthy attorney and arrange care for your dependents.

Editor:

I sat up late at night watching several news platforms, listened to families express their fears and recalled Trump’s campaign promises. Emphatically, trying piece information together to help these people, because most of them are not gangs or terrorists. They are families looking for a safe way of life.
