Discover the inspiring journey of Luther Vandross in “Luther: Never Too Much,” a captivating documentary directed by Dawn Porter.

I have been a devoted fan of the late, great Luther Vandroff ever since I first heard his mesmerizing voice on ‘Glow of Love’ while he was the lead vocalist for the group Change. His untimely passing sent shockwaves through the R&B community and deeply affected me. However, his music continues to resonate, and with the release of a new documentary from CNN, we now have the opportunity to celebrate his extraordinary life once more. Here’s the story:

CNN Films presents the compelling narrative of the legendary Luther Vandross in “Luther: Never Too Much,” which chronicles his journey to becoming one of the most celebrated and influential artists in music history. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter, known for CNN Films’ “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” the documentary is produced by Raindog Films and Foxxhole Productions in collaboration with Sony Music Entertainment, Sony Music Publishing, and Trilogy Films. The film is set to premiere on January 1, 2025, at 8 PM ET/PT on CNN.

“Luther: Never Too Much” traces Vandross’s life from his early days in Harlem—where he performed in the Apollo Theater house band and appeared in the inaugural episodes of “Sesame Street”—to his rise as the ultimate love song maestro. Featuring an extensive collection of rarely seen archival footage, the film allows Vandross to narrate his own story alongside insights from close friends and musical collaborators, including Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Valerie Simpson, and Roberta Flack. The documentary delves into the complexities and ironies of Vandross’s illustrious career, highlighting his personal challenges, health battles, and a lifelong quest for respect and understanding.

“It was exhilarating to explore Luther’s musical brilliance while making this film,” remarked director Dawn Porter. “We sifted through hundreds of hours of interviews, concert footage, and photographs to create this unique portrait.” Porter added, “I feel incredibly fortunate to share this story in a time when so much feels divisive; Luther’s narrative embodies pure joy.”

“CNN Films has a rich tradition of welcoming the New Year with music documentaries, and Dawn Porter has artfully captured both the public and private aspects of Luther Vandross’s life,” stated Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent, CNN Originals, and creative development, CNN Worldwide. “This film offers CNN audiences an intimate look at his remarkable songbook and lasting impact.”
