What Do We Believe?
Cultural representation matters for children when they are learning how to read.
All children, particularly children of color must experience the “Intimacy of Literacy” when learning how to read:
1. INTEREST – a child’s literacy experiences should reflect the enjoyment in their everyday life, music, stories, and the people that look like them.
2. CONFIDENCE – a child should have consistent access to culturally responsive stories that encourage self-awareness, self-identity, love for self, and love for others.
3. JOY – the learning how to read EXPERIENCE should leave a child feeling unbridled happiness.
