Commemorate Freedom and Togetherness at the Juneteenth 5K in Metro East St. Louis

Celebrating Freedom, Empowering Fathers, and Investing in the Next Generation
East St. Louis, IL – On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Metro East St. Louis Community Initiative (MESLCI), in partnership with Fathers and Families Support Center, the Juneteenth Commission, and the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. – Delta Epsilon Lambda Chapter, will host the Sixth Annual Juneteenth 5K Run/Walk at Frank Holton State Park (4500 Pocket Road, East St. Louis, IL 62205).
This year’s event proudly centers on the celebration of fatherhood—uplifting the critical role of fathers as protectors, providers, and mentors within their families and communities. The Run will begin at 8:30 AM, with Walk participants starting at 8:45 AM along a designated route within the park.
In honor of both Juneteenth and National Men’s Health Awareness Month, this community-driven event encourages participants to come together for wellness, unity, and purpose. The event raises funds to provide:
- Scholarships and book stipends for college-bound youth
- Summer camp programs for local youth
- Cultural enrichment experiences that nurture leadership and identity
Why Fathers Matter Now More Than Ever
As we celebrate freedom and progress, this event draws special attention to the powerful influence of engaged fathers in strengthening families, improving child outcomes, and building safer, healthier communities.
“Fatherhood is a cornerstone of a strong society,” said Michael Boyd, Event Chairperson and MESLCI Board Member. “This Juneteenth 5K is about more than fitness—it’s about honoring our heritage, elevating our fathers, and supporting our youth with real opportunities to thrive.”
Addressing the Urgent Need
Black male college enrollment has seen a 39% decline between 2011 and 2020. Currently, Black men make up just 4.5% of male college students, with only 22.8% earning a bachelor’s degree or higher. Socioeconomic challenges, educational inequities, and access gaps continue to affect youth across our region.
