Following the EF3 tornado in St. Louis on May 16, Missouri Commerce and Insurance Director Angela Nelson emphasizes the importance of providing residents with swift insurance help to support recovery efforts.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. ā€“ In the aftermath of the EF3 tornado that ripped through the St. Louis area on May 16, Missouri Commerce and Insurance Director Angela Nelson says the focus is getting residents the insurance help they need as quickly as possible.

ā€œThe insurance industry in Missouri has always been responsive to the needs of Missourians,ā€ said Director Nelson. ā€œAs of 9 a.m. this morning, I have already been in contact with insurance companies, and most are already on the ground providing on-site assistance with claims.ā€

She says that insurance companies have directly contacted her to provide information regarding their plans and activities. She is also asking for some preliminary information to help her assess the situation and give as much information as possible to state leaders.

ā€œWe are currently looking at the number of exposures in the areas hit by the tornado, including those with homeowners, renters or auto policies,ā€ she said. ā€œIn the meantime, consumers should make the department’s consumer hotline their first call. We don’t sell insurance. Our job is to help consumers understand their policies and the claim-filing process. We answer questions because insurance can be overwhelming, especially in a crisis. Our post-disaster claims guide is a good resource to help you through this process. We also have experts on call to help you. Please reach out at 800-726-7390.ā€

DCI has also set up a special web page to simplify the process of getting information and resources into the hands of Missourians.

Director Nelson plans to visit with insurance carriers and consumers in St. Louis on Tuesday, May 20.

ā€œWe want those impacted by the tornado in St. Louis to know we’re here, and our goal is to assist as quickly as possible. Let us be your first call – it’s our job to help you during times like these,ā€ Director Nelson said.
