Here is the story from KMOV:
A new Ronald McDonald House opened in St. Louis City Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
The $34 million facility is located on Chouteau, near Forest Park. It has four floors and lets families stay for free while their children get treatment at St. Louis-area hospitals.
The new building will allow Ronald McDonald House to serve 40 percent more families than before and give those families access to private suites.
The facility replaces the two older locations on Park Avenue and West Pine.
Global RMHC History
In 1973, Philadelphia Eagles football player Fred Hill and his wife, Fran, learned that their daughter, Kim, had leukemia. While traveling into Philadelphia for treatment at the children’s hospital, they met other families in the same situation. These families drove hours to the hospital to be with their children, only to sleep overnight in waiting room chairs and to eat from vending machines because they had nowhere else to go.
Fred Hill and his football team decided to do something for these families… build them a “home-away-from-home” in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Eagles teamed up with local McDonald’s Owner/Operators to raise money, purchase and restore a house near the hospital where these families could stay. By October of 1974, the first Ronald McDonald House was born. Since that time, more than 350 Houses have been built worldwide.
More:
Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. Often, it can be a long time to be away from home or to divide a family. And, for children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having their mom and dad close by for love and support.
There are two Ronald McDonald Houses in St. Louis that provide a home-away-from-home for families so they can stay close to their hospitalized child at little or no cost. Our Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. We allow families to face the weight of illness together and to focus on the health of their child rather than grocery shopping, cleaning, or cooking meals.
RMHC St. Louis requests a nominal fee for a family’s stay at the House, but no family is turned away or denied a future stay because of their ability to pay.
