Celebrating a life dedicated to truth, community, and journalistic excellence.

St. Louis lost a pioneering voice in journalism with the passing of Michael C. Williams, longtime publisher of the St. Louis Sentinel, on March 2, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on August 4, 1944, Williams dedicated his life to uplifting the voices of African Americans in St. Louis through independent media.

For decades, Williams served as the driving force behind the St. Louis Sentinel, one of the city’s three historically Black newspapers, alongside the St. Louis American and St. Louis Argus. Under his leadership, the Sentinel became a trusted source of news, analysis, and advocacy for the Black community, tackling issues ranging from civil rights and political affairs to local business and cultural achievements.

Williams’ tenure as publisher and editor of the Sentinel was marked by his commitment to truth and community empowerment. He believed that Black media served as a critical tool for education, accountability, and representation, ensuring that stories often overlooked by mainstream outlets received the attention they deserved. His passion for journalism and his unwavering dedication to social justice made him a respected figure in both the media industry and the St. Louis community.

Williams’ passing comes at a challenging time for independent media, particularly African-American publications, which continue to battle financial difficulties, declining circulation, and shifts in digital consumption. With the Sentinel now ceasing publication, it is more important than ever to support the two remaining historic Black newspapers in St. Louis—the St. Louis American and the St. Louis Argus—to ensure that Black voices, stories, and perspectives continue to be heard.

Williams’ homegoing services will be held at First Baptist Church, 3100 Bell Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63106. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, March 7, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the funeral service taking place on Saturday, March 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lincoln University Alumni Association in Jefferson City, MO, honoring Williams’ commitment to education and the advancement of future generations.
