About Parent Heart Watch Parent Heart Watch (PHW) is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to protecting children and young adults from sudden cardiac arrest and preventable sudden cardiac death through education, advocacy, and fostering systemic change.

Parent Heart Watch (PHW), the premier national organization focused exclusively on safeguarding children and young adults from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and related fatalities, is excited to announce the ongoing expansion of its Get Charged Up! program, which was launched in 2017, in conjunction with the recent enactment of the HEARTS Act of 2024.

The HEARTS Act signifies a substantial advancement in youth heart safety and reinforces the long-standing commitment of Parent Heart Watch, established in 2005, to enhance education, prevention, and life-saving measures aimed at protecting young hearts.

Introducing Get Charged Up! — A Lifesaving Initiative Since its inception in 2017, the Get Charged Up! program has empowered schools and youth-serving organizations to foster a culture of readiness and response to cardiac emergencies. The program has made significant strides, including:

Achievements to Date:

  • Provided organizations with documented Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs), ensuring that staff and volunteers are equipped to respond effectively when every second counts—often their first formal plan.
  • Distributed 180 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) across 41 states, with 33% of participants gaining AED access for the first time.
  • Safeguarded over 162,000 young hearts through the program’s implementation.
  • Currently supporting 22 organizations, including schools, youth sports teams, and daycare centers, as they complete the program.

Key Program Features:

  • Mentorship and Support: Ongoing assistance from initial onboarding through the sustained application of CERPs.
  • CERP Templates and Tools: Developed in collaboration with an American Heart Association National Task Force, these resources ensure preparedness through CPR/AED training, communication strategies, and emergency drills.
  • AED Distribution: Providing essential AEDs and accessories to organizations that adopt and practice comprehensive cardiac emergency response protocols.

“Through Get Charged Up!, we’re equipping communities with the resources necessary to prevent the tragedy of sudden cardiac death in children and young adults. Each AED installed and every person trained brings us closer to saving lives,” stated Martha Lopez-Anderson, Executive Director of Parent Heart Watch.

A Legislative Victory: The HEARTS Act of 2024 The HEARTS Act of 2024, recently signed into law by President Biden, marks a significant milestone in promoting youth heart health. The Act initiates a federal grant program to support:

  • The creation of risk assessment tools to identify youth at risk of SCA.
  • Public education initiatives aimed at recognizing symptoms and responding to cardiac emergencies.
  • Increased access to AEDs and CPR training in schools and communities.

“The HEARTS Act emphasizes the critical need for a national commitment to youth heart safety,” Lopez-Anderson continued. “This funding will enhance efforts to educate, equip, and empower individuals to take action during cardiac emergencies, perfectly aligning with our mission.”
