USA basketball had a successful Olympic run, as both the men’s and women’s teams have won gold.
Team USA took on France (like the men’s matchup), and USA beat them 67-66. This game came down to the wire, and Gabby Williams, who spent some time in the WNBA, made a shot for France towards the end. However, her foot was on the 3-point line. If her shot was a 3-pointer, that would have tied the game and could have forced overtime. Her foot was on the line, and counted for two. It was reminiscent of a shot by Kevin Drant in the NBA playoffs. In 2021, Durant hit a shot that would have been a game winner, but his foot was on the line. The Brooklyn Nets, who Durant played for at the time nearly had the win, but the Milwaukee Bucks came away with it in overtime.
Williams’ shot was impressive, but USA managed to get the win. A’ja Wilson led USA with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Kelsey Plum and Kahleah Copper both scored 12 points off the bench. Williams was France’s leading scorer with 19 points.
Team USA’s win marked their 61st consecutive win. It also is their eighth straight gold medal. They won bronze in 1992, but since then, it has been all gold. This gold medal is also special, as it is the sixth gold of Diana Taurasi’s career. In what will be her final USA basketball run, she went out on a high note.
““Twenty years of putting this jersey on is truly a dream come true,” she said. “It’s an honor to share the court with the best in the world for 20 years.” Taurasi said.
Team USA won a hard-fought battle, and as these players gear up for the rest of their regular season, they return home with a huge honor.
