Discover how Pastor Reverend Spencer Lamar and First Lady Gail Booker transformed their church’s parking lot into a thriving disaster relief center, supported by dedicated volunteers including activist Dr. Marty K. Casey.
Since the devastating tornado and powerful winds struck St. Louis on May 16, the entire region has come together in remarkable solidarity. The community has worked tirelessly to ensure that no stone is left unturned in the relief efforts. I have been covering this ongoing disaster response and continue to be inspired by the resilience and compassion of the people of Metro St. Louis. Whether volunteering to clear stubborn, damaged trees, building tiny homes, providing summer trades for young people, setting up camps, or feeding those affected by the tragedy, their dedication is truly admirable.
According to city officials, damages have exceeded $1.5 billion, with homes destroyed, windows shattered, and families displaced—or reluctant to leave their condemned properties.
Amidst this chaos, churches like St. Paul AME in the West End have played a vital role. Located near Hamilton Heights, an area that experienced less severe damage, the church initially faced only power and phone outages that lasted for weeks. In contrast, neighborhoods further south—closer to the Central West End, Forest Park, the Middle West Side, and much of the already distressed North Side—suffered extensive destruction.
Pastor Reverend Spencer Lamar and First Lady Gail Booker transformed the church’s parking lot into a disaster relief hub. The effort began weeks ago with live music, giveaways, and a BBQ feast. Today, this relief center continues to operate, supported by dedicated church members, including activist Dr. Marty K. Casey. Known for her impactful causes under the moniker Stop.Breathe.Think, Marty is a well-known figure in the city for getting things done. She emphasizes that “Two things you can never take back: Bullets & Words.”
Marty has been actively involved every day, distributing essentials to those in need. In the West End neighborhood—bordering Hamilton Heights to the south—there was little direct storm damage. However, the community still faces ongoing challenges. Some residents experienced power outages and had to discard hundreds of dollars worth of spoiled food. As Marty notes, the church’s resource store remains open to assist anyone in need, ensuring that help continues where it’s most needed.
