ST. LOUIS — A somber walk will reflect on a horrific day in our nation’s history. On this day in 1917, tens of thousands of people lined the streets of New York City to protest a massacre that happened in East St. Louis.
Hundreds of people died, homes were set on fire, shots were fired, and people were beaten. This all followed a workers’ strike, leading to investigations and widespread outrage soon after. Robin Carey Boyd, the NAACP president of the East St. Louis branch, said they are going to pay tribute to Sonya Massey today. She was a 36-year-old woman shot and killed by police in her home in Illinois earlier this month.
The march is set to start at 2 p.m. this afternoon. It will begin at Morningstar Church on State Street and conclude at the Clyde C. Jordan Senior Center, just under a mile away. Participants are asked to dress in all white.
