Greenwood Cemetery, a cornerstone of African American history in St. Louis, is taking center stage at the Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) with the documentary Greenwood. Directed by Jim Karpowicz, this powerful film delves into the rich history of Greenwood Cemetery, the first commercial non-sectarian burial ground for African Americans in the St. Louis area.

A Legacy of Resilience and Preservation

Founded in 1874, Greenwood Cemetery spans 31.85 acres and serves as the final resting place for over 50,000 African Americans. It holds a significant place in history, not only as a burial ground but also as a testament to the resilience and contributions of the African American community. The cemetery has been recognized as a National Historic Place since 2004 and was recently honored as part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom in 2023.

The documentary Greenwood sheds light on the ongoing efforts to restore and preserve this historic site. It highlights the dedication of the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association and the community’s commitment to honoring the legacy of those interred within its grounds.

A Special Feature at the Black History Tour of St. Louis

As part of the Black History Tour of St. Louis, Greenwood will be screened during SLIFF, running from November 6-16. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore the cemetery’s historical significance and the stories of notable individuals buried there, such as Harriet Robinson Scott, Lucy Ann Delaney, and Charlton Hunt Tandy.

Adding to the experience, filmmakers will be present for a post-screening Q&A session, providing deeper insights into the making of the documentary and the importance of Greenwood Cemetery in preserving African American history.

Join the Movement

Greenwood Cemetery’s story is not just about the past; it’s about the future. The Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association invites everyone to contribute to the restoration and preservation efforts. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, every effort helps ensure that this historic site continues to educate and inspire generations to come.
