Malcolm X’s family targets the U.S. government with a lawsuit alleging complicity in the late civil rights leader’s assassination.

In a historic move, the family of Malcolm X has filed a $100-million federal lawsuit against several U.S. law enforcement agencies, accusing them of involvement in the assassination of the civil rights leader nearly six decades ago. The lawsuit targets the FBI, CIA, and New York Police Department (NYPD), claiming these agencies were aware of, yet did not prevent, the plot to kill Malcolm X.

The announcement was made at a press conference in New York, led by Ilyasah Shabazz, one of Malcolm X’s daughters, and renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The press conference was held at a memorial center located at the site where Malcolm X was assassinated, drawing attention to questions that have lingered about the circumstances of his death.

“We believe that they all conspired to assassinate Malcolm X, one of the greatest thought leaders of the 20th century,” Crump stated. He emphasized that the lawsuit seeks to unearth concealed evidence, secure reparations for the family, and establish an accurate historical account of the events leading to Malcolm X’s death.

The assassination of Malcolm X occurred on February 21, 1965, as he was preparing to deliver a speech at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, New York City. Talmadge Hayer, a member of the Nation of Islam, confessed in court to being one of the three gunmen involved in the murder. Despite this confession, speculation has persisted that government agencies may have known about the assassination plan and allowed it to proceed, potentially due to Malcolm X’s controversial stance on racial separation and his eventual split from the Nation of Islam.

In recent years, the narrative surrounding Malcolm X’s assassination has continued to evolve, with ongoing debates about the role of intelligence agencies in civil rights era violence against prominent Black figures. Ilyasah Shabazz hopes the lawsuit will bring justice to her family and shed light on decades-old speculations of government involvement.

While the NYPD declined to comment on the lawsuit, both the FBI and CIA have yet to respond to requests for comment. The lawsuit is expected to rekindle public interest in the life and legacy of Malcolm X, a monumental figure in the struggle for racial equality.

The legal action underscores the enduring impact of Malcolm X’s legacy, as his family seeks to ensure that the story of his life and untimely death is told with truth and transparency.
