Exploring New Business Opportunities & Networking at the Heartland St. Louis Black Chamber Event

The Heartland St. Louis Black Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a business webinar networking event that served as an inspiring and enlightening gathering for African American entrepreneurs and business professionals in St. Louis. The event featured key insights into community development and investment strategies spearheaded by the St. Louis Equity Fund (SLEF), a pivotal player in fostering affordable housing and revitalizing communities within the region.
Key Speakers and Highlights

The evening was expertly facilitated by Dr. Marvin Steele, President of the Heartland St. Louis Black Chamber of Commerce. A major highlight was the presentation by Andrew Walshaw, President & CEO of the St. Louis Equity Fund. Mr. Walshaw detailed ongoing plans to collaborate with Affordable Housing Developers, with a commitment to funding at least 5,200 homes. He emphasized the importance of knowing the responsibilities involved when partnering with SLEF, especially as they expand their impact across the St. Louis and Kansas City metropolitan areas.

Cleo Miller, the Construction Manager at SLEF, also shared his experiences since joining in March 2020. With responsibilities ranging from managing construction partnerships to ensuring the transition to ownership, his insights provided a comprehensive look at the operational side of affordable housing projects.
Community and Investment Insights
Gerald Grier, Chief Information Officer at the Heartland St. Louis Black Chamber of Commerce, introduced an innovative initiative to establish a Call Center aimed at alleviating the operational burdens faced by businesses. This initiative signifies the Chamber’s commitment to fostering an environment of support and growth for African American enterprises.
The event also underscored the mission of the St. Louis Equity Fund, which has successfully raised over $500 million and developed more than 5,128 housing units since its inception. Their efforts have not only provided affordable housing but have also stimulated economic growth through strategic public/private partnerships and effective asset management.
