After 15 years of transformative leadership, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, Director of St. Louis Lambert International Airport, has announced her plans to retire in the fall of 2026. Mayor Cara Spencer shared the news, highlighting Hamm-Niebruegge’s remarkable contributions to the airport and the St. Louis region since she assumed the role in January 2010.

“On its best day, running something as complex as a major airport is challenging work. For fifteen years, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge has led our airport with excellence, grace, and distinction,” said Mayor Spencer. “Our airport and our region are much better off as a result of her leadership, and her work developing the plan to transform the airport has set the stage for our next chapter.”

A Legacy of Leadership and Transformation

Hamm-Niebruegge’s tenure at St. Louis Lambert International Airport has been marked by resilience, innovation, and a forward-thinking vision. Under her leadership, the airport has achieved several significant milestones, including:

Modernization Efforts: Spearheading the plan to transform the airport into a state-of-the-art, single-terminal facility, setting the stage for a new era of travel in St. Louis.

Post-Pandemic Recovery: Successfully restoring passenger levels to pre-COVID numbers by the summer of 2023, a testament to her strategic planning and collaboration with the airline industry.

Economic Growth: Strengthening ties with the business community to expand the airport’s economic impact on the region.

Cultural Enrichment: Expanding the Lambert Art and Culture Program to showcase local artists and enhance the traveler experience.

International Connectivity: Securing new nonstop international flights to destinations like Frankfurt, Germany, and London, England, through partnerships with Lufthansa and British Airways.

Disaster Recovery: Leading the airport’s recovery after the devastating EF4 tornado in April 2011, which caused $25 million in damages, including significant destruction to Concourse C of Terminal 1.

Reflecting on her time at the airport, Hamm-Niebruegge expressed gratitude for the opportunity to shape the future of St. Louis Lambert International Airport. “This has been a remarkable opportunity to transform the airport into not only the transportation center the region needs, but also the modern front door St. Louis deserves,” she said. “It has been a true honor to lead this airport for the past fifteen years, and I will depart knowing that we will leave it better than we found it. The best days for Lambert and for St. Louis lie ahead.”

Praise from Civic Leaders

Hamm-Niebruegge’s leadership has earned widespread praise from civic and business leaders who credit her with elevating the airport’s role in the region’s economic and cultural landscape. Ambassador Kevin O’Malley, Chair of the County Port Authority, lauded her dedication and impact, saying, “I have had the pleasure of working with Rhonda on matters affecting the growth of our region’s economic base and know that her years of experience, her attention to detail, and her love of St. Louis will be seen for years to come.”

Looking Ahead

As Hamm-Niebruegge prepares to step down in 2026, a national search will be launched to find her successor. Her departure marks the end of an era for St. Louis Lambert International Airport, but her legacy will undoubtedly shape its future for years to come.

With over 25 years of experience in aviation management prior to her role at STL—including positions with American Airlines, Trans World Airlines, and Ozark Air Lines—Hamm-Niebruegge’s career has been deeply rooted in St. Louis. Her leadership has not only transformed the airport but has also left an indelible mark on the city she calls home.
