Meet the organizations spearheading positive change and deepening community roots across Kansas City.

Kansas City is a place where neighborhood pride runs deep. From historic districts to areas undergoing revitalization, our city’s strength lies in its communities—and in the people and organizations working daily to protect, uplift, and invest in them.
As challenges like housing instability, gentrification, and increased costs continue to impact neighborhoods across the metro, these five organizations are stepping up with community-rooted solutions. Whether preserving affordable housing, empowering residents to shape their future, or building trust at the block level, each group makes a real, tangible impact.
Here are five organizations making an impact in Kansas City’s neighborhoods every day:
1. Santa Fe Area Council – One of Kansas City’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, Santa Fe, is home to a legacy of Black pride and resiliency. The Santa Fe Area Council works to preserve this history while also advocating for neighborhood improvements, community pride, and supporting the well-being of its residents. Through clean-up efforts, home repair programs, and youth engagement, the council is building a stronger, more unified community from the inside out.
2. Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City – Habitat for Humanity is transforming lives by helping families build and improve places to call home. By constructing and renovating affordable homes, Habitat for Humanity ensures that more Kansas Citians can access safe, stable housing. Their work empowers families, strengthens neighborhoods, and increases long-term stability throughout the metro.
3. Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) – Focused on a 10-neighborhood area in Kansas City’s urban core, UNI tackles systemic challenges through partnerships, programs, and place-based investment. From workforce development and health equity to youth mentorship and community beautification, UNI brings together residents and partners to co-create thriving, opportunity-filled neighborhoods.
4. Trust Neighborhoods – Trust Neighborhoods creates Mixed-Income Neighborhood Trusts (MINTs) that ensure long-term affordability without displacing current residents. Operated in partnership with local community organizations, MINTs empower neighborhoods to control their housing future, preserve affordability, and build generational wealth.
5. Kansas City Community Land Trust (KCCLT) – The KCCLT puts vacant, abandoned, and tax-delinquent properties back to good use in a way that supports long-term community ownership. By removing properties from the speculative market and placing them into a community land trust, KCCLT helps ensure housing remains affordable and accessible to Kansas Citians for generations to come.

Together, these organizations are creating a Kansas City where every neighbor has the opportunity to live in a safe, stable, and thriving community. Their work reminds us that when we invest in our neighborhoods, we invest in a stronger future for us all.
