Black Greek Letter Organization (BGLO) Celebrations
The Divine Nine—historically Black fraternities and sororities—are known for their commitment to service, unity, and cultural pride. During Thanksgiving, these values shine brightly through various activities and traditions.

Umoja Karamu: A Celebration of Unity and Black Heritage
For some, Thanksgiving is observed through the lens of Umoja Karamu, a holiday created in 1971 by Dr. Edward Sims Jr. as an alternative to traditional Thanksgiving. Swahili for “unity feast,” Umoja Karamu is a celebration of Black history, the African Diaspora, and the ongoing struggle for liberation.
Purpose and Goals
Umoja Karamu was designed to affirm Black traditions, build community, and reflect on the rich history of the African Diaspora. It serves as a time to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future, encouraging participants to continue the fight against racism and inequality.
Date and Rituals
Traditionally celebrated on the fourth Sunday in November, Umoja Karamu includes storytelling, cultural events, and creative expressions that highlight the resilience and achievements of Black people. The celebration culminates in a symbolic meal, where each dish represents a different aspect of the Black experience.
Symbolic Foods
Unlike the traditional Thanksgiving turkey, Umoja Karamu features foods with deep cultural significance, such as black-eyed peas, rice, cornbread, and leafy greens. These dishes symbolize unity, strength, and the enduring spirit of the African Diaspora.
