Advocates Push for Improved Funding and Resources for Missouri Schools

AYP – Committed to empowering individuals through literacy, achievement, and educational advancement

Last week, parents, students, staff, and supporters of St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) gathered at the Missouri State Capitol for the SLPS Parents Day of Action. Joining forces with the Normandy Schools Collaborative, the group united to amplify their voices for public education and highlight some of the key issues impacting their children’s futures.
The event served as a platform for SLPS families and advocates to share their personal stories, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs of public education. Central issues on the agenda included advocating for improved school safety, expanded mental health support, and holding all schools accountable within Missouri’s rapidly changing education landscape.
One of the most significant discussions focused on combating school privatization and its effects on public school resources and equity. By engaging directly with lawmakers, the SLPS community aimed to educate and inspire change to protect public education and ensure a brighter future for all students.
This impactful day was spearheaded by dedicated organizers, including Gloria Nolan, SLPS Parent Liaison, and Parent Action Council Co-Chairs Tracy Fantini and Avis Funches. Mayor Brian Jackson also lent his support, emphasizing the importance of community-led education advocacy.
The Day of Action highlighted the strength and resilience of the SLPS community. Parents left empowered, knowing their voices made a difference. Participants are encouraged to continue the conversation on social media using #WeAreSLPS.
This event is a reminder of the incredible power of collective action. By standing together, the SLPS community is driving meaningful change for public education in Missouri.
