ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Atlanta’s own Spelman College has been ranked as the country’s No. 1 Historically Black College and University (HBCU) for the 18th year in a row by U.S. News & World Report.
“This recognition reflects our strong tradition of attracting exceptional students, outstanding faculty, dedicated staff and strong leadership,” Spelman College President Helene D. Gayle said. “We take pride in being the No. 1 HBCU for the 18th consecutive year and ranking among the top 40 liberal arts institutions.”
Spelman also ranked No. 1 for Top Performers in Social Mobility and has consistently ranked among the top National Liberal Arts Institutions, both of which are also tallied by U.S. News and World Report. Social mobility is seen as an indicator of the return on investment for college students’ families and society as a whole.
Earlier this year, Spelman College received a $100 million donation from trustee Ronda Stryker, the largest single donation ever given to an HBCU. The money will support student scholarships, housing, academic development and other “flexible funding needs,” the school said.
