NAACP St. Louis champions an ambitious education initiative, urging the city to use Rams settlement funds to improve education equity.

The St. Louis City Branch of the NAACP is urging local and state officials to support  the development and funding of a comprehensive public education plan for the City of St. Louis. The organization is calling for the allocation of a portion of the Rams settlement funds as well as additional  state funding to finance this crucial initiative.

Key points of the proposed plan include:

1. Addressing the $1.8 billion in estimated maintenance costs for St. Louis Public Schools over the  next 20 years.

2. Fostering coordination between public, charter, and private education stakeholders.

3. Improving academic outcomes, particularly in early childhood education.

4. Exploring innovative uses for closed school buildings, including affordable housing and community centers.

5. Developing a dedicated public education transportation system.

The plan would typically include elements such as facilities master planning, academic performance  improvement strategies, teacher recruitment and retention plans, early childhood education expansion,  community schools’ initiatives, career and technical education pathways, and funding equity measures.

Adolphus M. Pruitt, II, President of the St. Louis City NAACP, stated, “A comprehensive citywide  education plan will pay dividends in improved educational outcomes, stronger communities, and a more  vibrant St. Louis for generations to come. We urge city officials to allocate a portion of the Rams  settlement funds and appeal to the state for additional funding to support this vital initiative, as it aligns  perfectly with the goals of revitalizing our communities.

“The NAACP estimates the cost for developing such a plan could range from $2-5 million, depending on  the scope and depth of analysis required.

The organization believes that using a combination of Rams settlement funds and state funding for this  purpose would be a wise investment in the city’s future.

About The NAACP – The NAACP’s mission is to ensure the political, educational, equality of minority group citizens of  States and eliminate race prejudice. The NAACP works to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic  processes.
