St. Louis Housing Authority receives federal funds to support homeless veterans. News on government aid and community support for veterans in St. Louis.
ST. LOUIS, MO (August 12, 2024) – The St. Louis Housing Authority (SLHA) has been awarded $97,372 in federal funding to expand affordable housing access for homeless Veterans through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH). This grant is part of a $20 million allocation in new HUD-VASH administrative fees distributed to 245 public housing agencies nationwide currently administering the program.
HUD-VASH is a collaborative initiative that combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV/Section 8) rental assistance with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) case management and supportive services. The program is designed to provide immediate access to permanent housing for homeless Veterans and their families, along with the necessary clinical services to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
The new funding will enhance SLHA’s ability to offer housing search assistance, expand landlord recruitment efforts, provide incentives and retention payments, assist Veterans with security deposits, and facilitate landlord-tenant mediation activities.
“Veterans have made invaluable sacrifices to protect our country,” said SLHA Executive Director Latasha Barnes. “This funding is another way to honor their service by ensuring they have access to affordable and safe housing.”
Veterans interested in receiving housing assistance through the HUD-VASH voucher program are encouraged to contact the St. Louis VASH Program Support Office at (314) 652-4100, extension 55481.
