I was devastated to learn that the company that is partially responsible for my many late-night cravings, founder Ted Drewes Jr., has died at 96. When I lived on the Southside near the Grand location, after the Cardinals’ baseball game, you would find me grabbing the delicious frozen treat. However, years later, after moving back west, I never forgot the cravings; raiding a Walgreens frozen aisle every time.

More:

Ted Drewes Jr. was a cherished figure in St. Louis, renowned for his leadership of the family’s frozen custard business which became a beloved institution in the city. Taking over from his father, Ted Drewes Sr., he dedicated over 80 years to the dessert stand, supported by four generations of family members and employees. His commitment to quality and community helped expand the business and solidify its status as a staple of St. Louis culture and identity.

In the heart of St. Louis, Missouri, there’s a name that resonates with the sweet taste of tradition: Ted Drewes. This family-owned frozen custard company has been a staple of the city since Ted Drewes Sr. founded it in 1929. With two locations, one on the iconic Route 66, Ted Drewes has become synonymous with St. Louis culture and its love for frozen custard.

The secret to their success lies in the quality of their custard, a recipe that has been perfected over decades. Ted Drewes’ frozen custard is known for its creamy texture and rich flavor, a treat that has been enjoyed by generations of families. It’s not just a dessert; it’s an experience that brings people together, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Beyond the delicious custard, Ted Drewes has also been a part of St. Louis’ holiday traditions, selling Christmas trees for over 50 years. This unique combination of desserts and decorations has made Ted Drewes a destination for both locals and tourists alike.

The legacy of Ted Drewes was carried on by Ted Drewes Jr., who recently passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of joy and community spirit. His dedication to the family business and his commitment to quality made him a beloved figure in the St. Louis community.

As we remember Ted Drewes Jr., we also celebrate the enduring legacy of the frozen custard that has become a symbol of St. Louis. It’s a tradition that’s here to stay, one delicious serving at a time.
